Medicare Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) for the Rest of 2025

If you missed the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, you may still have opportunities to enroll in or change your Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plan in 2025. Here’s what you need to know about Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) specific to Medicare, including those related to disasters.

What Is a Medicare Special Enrollment Period?

A Medicare Special Enrollment Period is a time outside of the usual enrollment windows when you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan if you experience certain qualifying events.

Common Qualifying Events for a Medicare SEP

You may be eligible for a Medicare SEP if you:

  • Lose Medicaid eligibility or Extra Help with prescription costs
  • Move to a new address that isn’t in your current plan’s service area
  • Move into or out of a skilled nursing facility or long-term care hospital
  • Gain, lose, or change other health coverage
  • Experience other life changes as defined by Medicare rules

Disaster-Related Special Enrollment Periods

If you were unable to enroll in or change your Medicare plan during a valid enrollment period because of a government-declared disaster or emergency (such as a hurricane, wildfire, or flood), you may qualify for a disaster-related SEP.

  • This SEP is available if you live in, or rely on someone living in, an area officially declared a disaster or emergency by federal, state, or local authorities.
  • You must have missed a valid Medicare enrollment period because of the disaster.
  • The disaster SEP typically lasts for the duration of the emergency and extends for several weeks or months after the disaster ends.
  • Coverage generally begins the first of the month after your enrollment request is processed.

What’s New for Medicare SEPs in 2025?

  • Monthly SEP for Dual Eligibles and Extra Help: As of January 1, 2025, people with both Medicare and Medicaid, or those receiving Extra Help, can change their Medicare Advantage or Part D plan once per month, instead of quarterly.
  • Integrated Care SEP: New opportunities for those enrolling in certain Dual Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs) that coordinate with Medicaid managed care.
